Abstract
This study was designed to estimate the incidence and to evaluate possible causative factors for erectile dysfunction following visual internal urethrotomy (VIU). We evaluated 29 patients who had undergone VIU between May 1990 and January 1992.
The
etiology, the and length of the stricture and the duration of psot-VIU follow-up were examined. A questionnaire was administered concerning erectile dysfunction and its possible association with VIU, as judged by erection and sexual intercourse
of
patients before and after VIU. Some patients underwent nocturnal penile erection monitoring by Rigiscan, papaverine, test, cavernosography, erection penography and bulbocavernosus reflex latency time. Two of 29 patients(9%) experienced erectile
dysfunction following VIU. One of these had confirmed venogenic erectile dysfunction. The other patient refused evaluation. It appears that men with long and multiple bulbous urethral strictures are at greater risk of erectile dysfunction after
VIU.
Further studies, such as autonomic nerve function and venous leakage evaluations, Must be performed before definitive conclusions can be made.
